Updated guidance on the safeguarding of children has been criticised by children's services leaders. Joe Lepper reports.

The government's attempt to update guidance on safeguarding children following the Baby Peter scandal has failed to impress children's services professionals.

The consultation on the updated version of Working Together to Safeguard Children has now closed, with the document expected to be published later this month.

Responses seen by CYP Now from key organisations involved in the safeguarding agenda have questioned its ability to effectively support children's professionals in the post-Baby Peter climate.

Ministers had hoped the revised guidance would go a long way towards meeting recommendations made in Lord Laming's review of child protection to improve training and support for frontline children's workers and information-sharing between health, social care and police.
