News Insight: Commissioner Maggie speaks out

Newly installed children's commissioner for England Maggie Atkinson is anticipating big changes.

The Children, Schools and Families Select Committee tried to block her appointment and the Conservatives want to review her post. But Maggie Atkinson, the new children's commissioner for England, comes to the role prepared.

After three weeks in the job, Atkinson is anticipating big changes, regardless of which party wins the general election. "We don't expect there to be no change in the role," she says. "What we do expect is to be a voice in that change."

Atkinson says a review of the post seems natural. "I would almost expect that, at the end of a five-year period and with a change of post holder, there would be a need to review," she explains. "But England needs somebody whose prime focus is to be the voice, promoter and defender of children and young people's rights."
