There were fewer under-18s serving a custodial sentence at 30 June 2004 than in the two previous years, the Home Office revealed in an answer to a Parliamentary question. The total of 1,959 young men and 150 young women compares favourably to figures of 2,242 and 173 at the same time in 2002.
