News in brief: Rates of truancy rising

Rates of truancy are rising, with more than a quarter of young people having taken at least one unauthorised day off school. Leaked figures from a Mori survey for the Youth Justice Board reveal that 26 per cent of young people aged 11 to 16 truanted last year, compared with 22 per cent the year before. Two-thirds of the secondary school-age children said they had drunk alcohol. The Youth Justice Board declined to comment on the figures, which were due to be released in July.
