News in brief: Chief inspector of schools committed to inspection services

The chief inspector of schools David Bell says he is committed to safeguarding the front-line delivery of inspection services. As expected, Ofsted announced last week that 500 jobs would be cut as part of its restructuring programme (Children Now, 24-30 November). Rosemary Murphy, chief executive of the National Day Nurseries Association, feared the cuts would affect childcare providers who already report problems reaching and maintaining contact with Ofsted administrators.
