New children's staff to be vetted

Staff new to the children's workforce will be the first to be scrutinised under the government's vetting and barring scheme, due to be introduced by the Independent Safeguarding Authority (ISA) next year.

Speaking yesterday (22 October) at a CYP Now conference on safeguarding in Birmingham, Alan Wheeler, communications manager for the vetting and barring programme scheme, set out the phasing-in strategy for the new safeguarding system.

He said new staff and those without Criminal Records' Bureau checks would be first to be registered through the scheme. The entire children's workforce will be registered within five years, working on the principle that the longer a person has been working with children, the later they will be required to sign up. Staff working in administrative roles in children's services will be the last to register.

Wheeler promised the ISA would publish a copy of its decision-making process shortly to reassure people that it will carry out the checks in a fair and transparent way.
