Private fostering refers to situations where a child is cared for and accommodated by someone other than a close relative for a period of 28 days or longer. Despite a legal duty to notify local authorities of such arrangements, the low number of notifications has long been a cause for concern.
Findings from a workforce survey revealed that awareness of private fostering is not high among practitioners who work with children. Forty-seven per cent of professionals working in social care reported they were well-informed about private fostering. However, professionals in social care were better informed than practitioners in other sectors with only 13 per cent of those working in education regarding themselves as well-informed.
