Circus Skills (Kilgour, 2002) found that participation workers felt very isolated in their roles, and wanted the opportunity to share good practice and network with each other. PWNE is a free network for adult workers, for whom children and young people's participation is a significant part of their job.
PWNE members face numerous challenges including not having enough time, money and resources to carry out participation work with children and young people and skills development. Often they encounter a lack of understanding of participation work among organisations. Funding presents a major barrier to developing sustainable participation work with children and young people in the long term, due to the short-term nature of many participation projects.
