NCB Now: HIV network looks at immigration status

1 min read
Following on from the Children, HIV, Asylum and Immigration report published in December 2006 by the Children and Young People HIV Network, part of NCB, the network is hosting a training course exploring how insecure immigration status affects children and families living with HIV.

This course comes at an exciting time for the sector when much work isbeing done to improve outcomes for this particularly vulnerable group ofchildren. The network is currently calling for a change in legislationso medical needs are given appropriate consideration when claims areprocessed.

The network believes families should not be sent back to a country wherethe child cannot continue anti-retroviral treatment or access paediatricservices and medical facilities.

The difficulties that all children in the asylum and immigration systemface are a major concern, but it is especially hard for those livingwith HIV. The course looks at the challenges current legislation posesand shows ways in which professionals can meet the needs of those livingwith HIV and insecure immigration status.
