The project, which will be based at NCB and managed by the Children'sPlay Council, is also great news for the play sector, marking theculmination of several years' work to make the case for children'splay.
Back in 1998, Chris Smith, then culture secretary, gave the sector threechallenges: to demonstrate outcomes for play provision, to develop aplaywork training and qualifications framework, and to speak with aunited voice. Do this, he said, and the Government will belistening.
Since that time the Children's Play Council has played a key role inbringing the sector together to meet those challenges. Landmarks haveincluded Best Play, setting out recognised outcomes for play provision,and the 2004 play review, Getting Serious About Play, chaired by FrankDobson and led by Children's Play Council's former director Tim Gill.Meanwhile, the council and its allies - inside and outside NCB - havekept up pressure on the government to prevent play from sliding down theagenda.
