The validity of such awareness events is sometimes questioned. It istrue that many of us do not want to be defined simply in terms of ourskin colour or sexual orientation. We all tick more than one box. But asthe month's organisers point out, lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgenderpeople have often hidden themselves in society for their own safety,while their contributions have been ignored by others. This month aimsto change that.
It reminds us of the discrimination and ignorance that many young peoplecan experience on a daily basis. Nearly three quarters of young lesbiansand gay men have played truant or faked illness to avoid homophobicbullying at school and four out of 10 have attempted suicide.
