NCB Now: Comment - Expulsion is not helpful for under-fives in need

1 min read
Government figures released earlier this week have revealed that approximately 4,150 children under five had been excluded from primary schools and nurseries - most for attacking teachers and fellow pupils, verbal abuse and generally disruptive behaviour.

There is no question that the figures are worrying. However, these 4,150 expelled children are the very children who desperately need the social skills gleaned through these vital early years settings. Demonising them at such a young age, and giving schools even more power to permanently expel, will not improve the situation - for the children or for society.

There has been a recent influx of funding for early years and there is currently a strong foundation for supporting children's learning and development across early years and childcare - but it takes time to see results and to reach the parents who need these services the most.
