Sustainable development, as defined in the UK's sustainable development strategy, enables "all people throughout the world to satisfy their basic needs and enjoy a better quality of life, without compromising the quality of life for future generations". It encompasses quality of life now and in the future, comprising key components such as well-being, social justice and environmental and economic sustainability.
Sustainable development is not widely understood and mainly considered the responsibility of specialist agencies. We need a positive and shared vision that engages the interest and skills of professionals working across the sector with, and for, all children and young people.
