In all my professional career the prospect of a new year has never seemed so challenging.

As uncertainty still looms over the health of global economies, our young people face growing challenges from the impact of shrinkage in family income, to widening barriers on every front preventing them from making successful transitions to independent adult life.

As youth workers, your practice is founded in shaping a curriculum from the realities of the young person's own life and aspirations; enabling experience to create understanding, ultimately leading to the individual having greater personal and collective control.

At a time when, for so many young people, their sense of being victims of circumstance is so strong, and when those circumstances are so difficult, we know this is when they need youth work most.
