I took no technology away with me, so I was incommunicado, which made the holiday. But it now means I'm faced with mountains of emails and paperwork. My PA has done a brilliant job of sifting and filtering, which is great - except everything that remains requires proper attention and concentration. Come early afternoon my body clock is expecting siesta. Maybe I could set up a project group to scope the viability of a policy initiative for the strategic introduction of a Little Nap to the working day.
Tuesday: It's outrageous that I take a holiday in early August and return to a football season already three games old. It never used to be like this. I've just undergone the trauma of relegation and need time to heal. I haven't got the emotional capital to face another season yet. Do the people who set these fixtures think it's fun? Do they think we enjoy being slaves to the game? The summer used to be a time to regain a semblance of humanity and relearn how to converse without reference to goal difference. I'm not ready for a new campaign.
