Most youth service chiefs believe inspections have positive impact

1 min read Youth Work
Two out of three local authority youth service chiefs believe inspections have a positive influence on their performance, a poll by the Association of Principal Youth and Community Officers (Apyco) has found.

Enhanced youth work inspections are currently carried out by Ofsted as part of joint area reviews but these will end later this year. In response to this, Apyco commissioned research looking at inspections and their impact on youth services.

The report, Benefits of Ofsted Inspections of Local Authority Youth Services and Connexions Partnerships, found 65 per cent of heads of youth services felt preparing for inspection made a significant contribution to raising staff performance standards.

The survey also found 81 per cent of principal youth officers recorded an improvement in staff morale during preparation for inspection and that there is strong support that inspection of youth work should continue.
