More street-based projects needed

Youth Justice
Local authorities are being encouraged to set up more street-based youth projects to deter youth crime.

The Youth Crime Action Plan, published last month, called on councils to offer more outreach projects to "disaffected young people when and where it is needed".

The plan added: "Offering young people viable and attractive alternatives to antisocial and criminal behaviour will help break the damaging cycle of negative influence."

But Kevin Jones, chair of the Federation for Detached Youth Work, said he had reservations about the proposals. "I don't think this is a good starting point for youth work," he said. "Going in with an agenda is never the best approach."
