More children's centres working with childminders

1 min read Early Years
New research has found 90 per cent of children's centres are working with registered childminders in their area.

The study was carried out by the National Childminding Association for the Department for Children, Schools and Families.

It found an increase of three per cent in the number of children's centres in England working with childminders since last year.

As part of the ten-year childcare strategy, the government wants all children's centres to link up with childminders.

The research found 41 per cent of children's centres worked with childminding networks. In total 58 per cent were working with local childminding groups and 82 per cent provided training for childminders.

Liz Bayram, chief executive of the association, said: "Childminders provide a childcare choice many families prefer and I want all children's centres to be working with local childminders to help families access them."

Beverley Hughes, children's minister, added: "I am pleased to see this report reflects close working between so many children's centres and childminder networks, but it does highlight some areas where children's centres can improve."
