The charity Missing People has received £310,000 over three years from the Department for Children, Schools and Families to create the Missing Children and Young People Team.
Ruth Mulryne, Missing People's director of services, said the charity wanted to use its expertise in finding adults to set up the children's team. Cases will be referred to the charity through the police, social services or families.
The team will be able to offer emotional support to a family and create a picture of how a child who has been missing for a long time may look when they are older.
Mulryne added: "If the police or carer have a mobile number we can text our runaway helpline number to them as they may be worried about getting in touch with family or the police. We can put them in touch with a counselling service to help bring them back to a place of safety."
