Minister calls for family approach

Social Care
Children's services need to start thinking about the whole family if child poverty is to be tackled, the minister for social exclusion has told CYP Now.

Cabinet Office minister Phil Hope said services working with vulnerable people should not just look at financial pressures, but other influences that can put families into poverty, such as family breakdown or drug addiction. "It's poverty in terms of aspiration, behaviour and lifestyle where we want to be able to give support and to bring about change for the better," he said.

Hope said service providers must think of the effect of a situation on others, for example, whether there is someone to look after a child if a parent is sent to prison.
