A Healthcare Commission review of maternity services in England found 21 per cent of mothers wanted more visits from a midwife after going home. It also showed 41 per cent of midwives agreed that "not enough time was spent with women during their first few days at home".
The report, Towards Better Births: A Review of Maternity Services in England, said while the national service framework says midwifery-led services should provide for the mother and baby for at least a month after birth or transfer from midwifery care, in practice babies were typically only 14 days old at the last contact with a midwife.
