Mental health: In search of understanding

5 mins read
Living with a mental health problem can be particularly difficult for a young person. Stephen Cook finds out how a Plymouth-based youth project is helping teenagers make sense of their illness and lead normal lives.

"I changed completely and I got quite stroppy," she says. "I took an overdose and I had a bad accident when I fell out of a window, but I don't like to talk about that too much - I want to move on."

She says the best thing since her illness began was being referred to Insight, a youth-focused mental health service for young people that provides practical as well as psychological and medical help.

"It was great having people understand me instead of judging me," says Nicola, now 21. "They talked through things with me and they helped my family. They put me on medication and helped me to deal with the voices and pressures of the past.
