
London Councils has approved the setting up of a London-wide apprenticeship scheme with a focus on finding ways local authorities can create placements, both in-house and through private contractors. It will also involve creating a joint target for councils. The places are needed to meet the government's 14 to 19 education reforms, which mean that by 2013 all young people will have the right to an apprenticeship.
Despite being home to 14 per cent of England's population, London currently provides just five per cent of the country's apprenticeships. A survey by London Councils also found there are just 437 apprenticeships run by councils in the capital. In addition, the survey found only 17 councils had already set a local apprenticeship target.
