Young people in London are hurting and they've been hurting for a while. That's why they express their hurt through violence and distraction.

If I were in charge of City Hall, I would come up with a strategy to get the Mayor to listen to young people. Instead of flooding the streets with police, I would go deeper and deal with the real issues. I would assign social services to a different role - they would have to listen to the needs of each family they deal with and focus on ways to restore them to a happier state.

Instead of talking to the police, teachers and youth services, I would go to the one person who should have the biggest voice in a child's life: the parent. I would also give the UK Youth Parliament a stronger voice, because it represents young people in the city. I would organise a city-wide campaign encouraging unity, because initiatives to stop crime and gang violence will never work unless young people learn how to unite.
