A policy motion condemning free schools and academies was passed at the Liberal Democrat's annual party conference on Monday.
It warned that free schools would increase "social divisiveness" and called on government to make sure that non-academy schools are not "financially penalised".
David Sawyer is Liberal Democrat lead member for children and young people in Bedford, where five schools are set to convert to academy status and one to free school status.
He claimed the government's free schools and academies policies will deprive the neediest schools of cash. "It will leave less money in the pot that we use to support the remaining schools in our local authority," he explained. "This could divert resources from the children that are most vulnerable."
