The Access all Areas report identifies the need for an explicit recognition of the vulnerability of care leavers aged 18 to 25 (‘Government must care-proof policies’, cypnow.co.uk, 17 April).
The report opens up a raft of opportunities for government to take up. These include improving access to benefits, graduate scholarships for looked-after children, quality standards for supported lodgings and better leaving custody, homelessness and psychiatric care services.
In this new era of localism, the Independent Children’s Homes Association is urging health and wellbeing boards to embrace the report’s ideas with a view to getting housing up the agenda, while keeping the balance between housing and care.
