Letters: Prison is no place for children

Lisa Harker rightly says prison is no place for children (Children Now, 1-7 December 2004). We go further - there are thousands of children and young people effectively disabled by speech, language and communication impairments who should not have ended up in the criminal justice system as a whole.

There's a progression between this "hidden disability", exclusion from school and young adults ending up in trouble, and it starts early. We need to spot and offer provision for these impairments as early as possible.

Ofsted has also just reported the education system is failing thousands of excluded children.

What's needed? More speech and language therapists. Language is key to the curriculum and communication is central to keeping vulnerable children and young adults in the learning process, preventing their marginalisation.

With appropriate support many of Ofsted's "failed children" would be supported again if the resources were found to keep them from ending up in the justice system.
