It showed that Sure Start and local authorities are trying to encourage men to work in childcare, which for a long time has been seen as a woman's role.
However, there are barriers that put men off a career in childcare. I am a fully qualified Pakistani male with an NVQ Level 3 in Early Years and Education and an NVQ Level 3 in Playwork. I had to work three times as hard as a woman to prove myself. I started in 1991 as a volunteer.
Although I didn't see childcare as my future, I found the one-day placement at a holiday care centre rewarding, exciting and fun. I wanted to make a difference. However, finding a suitable course was hard. I tried to enrol in colleges and private training centres but was rejected.
