The government's intention to make the free entitlement to childcare for two-year-olds from the most disadvantaged communities statutory is welcome evidence of its commitment to delivering high-quality childcare and early years education.

Ensuring that families in disadvantaged areas have access to a choice of high-quality childcare options will require all childcare providers, including registered childminders, to work together in partnership. The National Childminding Association (NCMA) will continue to work with local authorities to ensure that registered childminders are available as a childcare option to all families, ensuring each family can access the childcare best suited to their needs.

Sanctions not the answer

The welfare plans announced are supposed to create a simpler system. But a growing reliance on punitive sanctions inevitably increases the administrative burden, won't help the hardest-to-reach back into work and hurts the most vulnerable claimants hardest.
