Young people leaving care should no longer be pushed into independence at 18, says John Kemmis.

When will we begin to treat young people who have been in care like our own children?

A proposal for young people at 18 to be able to stay in their foster home until 21 that has been put forward by a group of foster care agencies led by the Fostering Network, could go a long way to achieving this.

We know from research that most young people leave home after 24 and I suspect this is getting later with the current economic climate. So the way some local authorities have pushed young people into "independence" at 18 (and sometimes before) is a scandal.
