Legal Update: Queen's Speech - What's in it for children?

Kamena Dorling, Policy and programmes manager at Coram Children's Legal Centre, examines the new government's proposed policy and legislative agenda for children and young people.

The Queen's Speech, delivered on 26 May, was of considerable interest to the children's sector, as it set out the new government's policy and legislative plans relating to children and young people.

Unfortunately, while measures outlined to increase free childcare provision were welcomed by the sector, there was little else that reflected an overarching strategy to improve the lives of children, and address pervasive issues like child poverty, inequality and discrimination.

The proposed Full Employment and Welfare Bill will include a reduction in the household benefit cap from £26,000 to £23,000 and a two-year freeze on the majority of working-age benefits, including unemployment benefit, child benefit and tax credits.
