A. In the past, a child born in the UK was automatically a British citizen, but since 1 January 1983, this is no longer the case.
A child born in the UK between 1 January 1983 and 1 July 2006 is automatically British if they were born to a British or settled mother (settled means having no time restrictions on your stay).
A child born in this time to a British or settled father is only automatically British if the child's parents were married at the time of the birth. A change has been made to the law on children born in this period to unmarried parents, but it is not yet in force.
