Legal Update: In a Nutshell - Research that involves children

Carrying out research with children raises particular legal and ethical issues that researchers should be aware of.

What process should be followed to complete an ethical review?

Every piece of research involving children should be subject to a tailored ethical review that, ideally, is subject to independent scrutiny. An ethical protocol should be developed, setting out the rationale for the research, and whether and how the need for the research is balanced against any potential harm that may arise to children taking part. It should also set out the ethical guidelines and principles that are to apply to the research and identify the ethical issues that may arise during the research and how they will be addressed. Organisations should ensure that trained and experienced professionals carry out any research, and those working directly with children should have a clean, up-to-date Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) check.
