Initiative reduces destitution among migrant children.

PROJECT

Project 17

FUNDING

Nearly £40,000 in 2014/15 from Trust for London and Unbound Philanthropy

BACKGROUND

Section 17 of the Children Act 1989 places a duty on councils to safeguard and promote the welfare of children in need. Yet by late 2012, refugee families in south-east London were finding it “almost impossible” to get support under this clause, according to Abi Brunswick, co-ordinator of Lewisham advice service Action for Refugees. Project 17 was set up in April 2013 in an effort to support families through the process.

ACTION

Families can contact Project 17 directly, or be referred by other charities or professionals such as health visitors. Most don’t have leave to remain in the UK. Around a third do have leave, but with the restriction “no recourse to public funds”, stopping them accessing benefits or housing.
