Leaving care: From care to where?

9 mins read
Despite improved legislation and better funding, the standard of services for care-leavers still varies wildly. Andy Hillier reports on the problems experienced and how services are trying to improve the situation.

Jonny was 18 at the time and had been given the flat by social services in Scarborough after moving out of his foster carers' home: "I wanted to live the bachelor lifestyle, but the flat I was given was a tatty old converted house in a run-down part of Scarborough."

Jonny's story reflects the struggles many of the estimated 6,000 young people aged 16 to 18 who leave care every year face. Often provided with limited support from local authorities, care-leavers are frequently placed in unsuitable accommodation in the worst parts of towns. They also face barriers when going on to higher education and when trying to access mental health services.
