
Six months on from what was thought to be a landmark legal ruling that could prevent swingeing cuts to youth services, campaigners have warned that local authorities are continuing to axe provision with little regard for the judgment.
Last November, the Court of Appeal ruled that North Somerset Council acted unlawfully when it reduced its youth service budget by 72 per cent. Judges said that the authority failed to consider the needs of vulnerable service users protected by the Equality Act 2010 when it made the decision to cut funding in February 2012.
The case, brought by youth service user Aaron Hunt, highlighted the need for local authorities to properly consult young people before altering service provision.
