Labour Party Conference News Brief: Pledge to reduce child poverty

Labour's pledge to reduce child poverty could fall victim to other spending commitments unless it is part of the party's manifesto for a third term, former Cabinet minister Stephen Byers has warned. Byers, a close ally of the Prime Minister, said the Treasury seemed unwilling to accept that major new tactics were needed if the interim target of halving child poverty by 2010 was to be reached.
