On 22 April, the government will announce its budget for the financial year 2009/10. In the campaign to end child poverty, it provides the last opportunity to ensure the target to halve child poverty by 2010 is met. If the government puts its money where its mouth is, campaigners believe the economy could be given a much needed boost in the process.
Historically, campaigners have always said that a fiscal stimulus of at least £3bn in the form of child tax credits and benefits for low-income families is required to meet the target. More recently, the Institute for Fiscal Studies (IFS) calculated that, in the current climate, the required figure is nearer to £4.2bn. Regardless of the numbers, the message of the campaign remains the same.
