Joint working - Housing can fill the education divide

A forthcoming report will call for more partnerships between schools and social housing providers. Janaki Mahadevan reports.

It has long been argued that the housing sector should play a central role in improving the lives of children and families. Now a report by the Chartered Institute of Housing will put forward the case for housing providers to increase engagement with schools and local communities.

Housing, Schools and Communities will highlight pockets of best practice when it is published at the end of this month, praising some successful partnership working in the social housing sector. But it will urge that this must be more widespread.

Making the case for improved joint working, the report outlines how both schools and housing providers have the capability to deliver benefits beyond their "core roles of providing accommodation and education".
