The sector is going to have to make savings yet challenges for children's social care professionals seem to be getting tougher.
Across the country, young people's needs are becoming more complex. Meanwhile, more placements are breaking down due to increased pressure upon capacity, especially in placements for young people with specialist or complex needs.
To counteract these trends, the sector needs better trained staff with the right expertise, and to create stability through a holistic service. Yet with council budgets cut by 28 per cent, this seems unlikely.
Those controlling the abacus must remember that they're dealing with the lives of individuals. While savings need to be made, we shouldn't sacrifice quality over cost.
