Jargon buster: Local education partnership (LEP)

Where might you hear it? In any conversation about the Building Schools for the Future (BSF) programme.

What does it mean? It's a crucial part of the £55bn BSF programme, which will see nearly every secondary school in the country rebuilt or renewed.

Created specifically for BSF, an LEP is a partnership between the local authorities and the private sector organisations they select to help them deliver the programme. As a rule, every authority must be part of an LEP in order to access the BSF funding.

The partners chosen by each authority must help them to plan, construct and maintain the schools. However, responsibility for how the money is spent, as well as education, still rests with the authority throughout the programme.
