Interview: The right sort of support - Anne Tranmer, foster carer, Rotherham

3 mins read
Nobody was more taken aback than Anne Tranmer when, late last year, she heard she was in line for a place on this year's New Year Honours list.

"It really was a complete surprise," says the foster carer and mother of two. "I got the letter in November and it said it was highly confidential, not a foregone conclusion, and you can't tell anybody. Keeping quiet about it for a month was quite hard. But just the idea that an ordinary person could have such an honour, it really is special."

Tranmer was awarded an MBE for services to children and families in Rotherham, south Yorkshire. She has a background in nursing but the honour comes after nearly a quarter of a century as a foster carer. During this time she and her husband have looked after more than 100 children and she has acted as a representative for hundreds of other foster carers in the Rotherham area.
