Initiative could alienate mothers parenting

1 min read Social Care
A Gordon Brown-endorsed initiative to help vulnerable young families risks backfiring if it appears to only target "bad mothers", researchers have warned.

The Prime Minister promised to expand the family nurse partnerships initiative throughout England at this year's Labour Party conference (CYP Now, 3-9 October). But a study published last week said the positive benefits of the initiative must be emphasised or it will risk stigmatising the young mums involved.

Because the partnerships are targeted at first-time parents, often aged under 20, predicting who is suitable for the programme is difficult, since participants have no track record, states the Department for Children, Schools and Families study.

Indicators used to identify these parents include poor education, poverty, mental illness, alcoholism, personal or partner history of offending, being ambivalent about parenthood, and being the child of a young mother.
