Infant mental health: Can babies get depressed?

Infancy is a key period for children's future mental health yet there are few specialist services targeted at this age group. Mike George investigates the best way forward.

"I tried to put a brave face on it, but I didn't know what to do with myself. I'm a single mum and I had the baby blues I suppose. My daughter's father wasn't really around, I'd moved out of my parents' house and felt very alone and very sad," reveals Caroline Bawdon.

Caroline, whose daughter is now two, is explaining how hard she was finding life during the first six months of being a mother on her own. "Like other mums I was seeing health visitors and, one day, I just broke down in tears and told one of them how bad I was feeling and how I was worried about this affecting my daughter. I could tell that my daughter was being affected, but how much I didn't know."
