Justice minister Maria Eagle last week revealed figures showing the number of young people aged 15 to 17 who had self-harmed in each young offender institution (YOI) since 2003.
The statistics show there were 850 cases of self-harm in the 27 YOIs in 2003, rising to 994 the following year. The figure increased to a peak of 1,162 in 2005 before dropping to 923 in 2006 and rising again to 1,007 last year.
Eagle warned the figures referred to the number of incidents of self-harm and not the number of people who had taken such action. She said the figures reflected all recorded incidents, no matter how minor they were.
