In The News - An alternative take on last week's media

- The Sun illustrated a story on underage drinking - "Brits are worst for drunk at 13" - with a photo of a young girl slumped amid a myriad of cans and bottles. But those who looked carefully at this tragic portrait of boozed-up Britain would have noticed that none of the liquor in question had actually been touched.

The poor lass appeared simply to be resting, seemingly oblivious to the unpopped bottle of champagne clasped in her hands, and without noticing the line-up of tempting unopened beer cans and wine bottles.

Meanwhile Private Eye described how a news agency journalist escaped with a police caution after giving a group of 16-year-olds cider and alcopops as a reward for posing for a series of photos to illustrate an article on the scourge of underage drinking for The Daily Mirror.

"The hapless hack told the youngsters they were welcome to hold on to the booze when the shoot was finished - and several of them went on to be involved later that night in what police described as 'a serious disorder incident'," reported the magazine. Oh dear, oh dear.
