In Practice: Up & running - Cumbria's rural centre

Cumbria's first rural children's centre celebrated its official launch at the end of June.

The Sure Start children's centre is in the village of Kirkby Thore inthe Eden Valley and based in purpose-built premises attached to thevillage school. Priorities include antenatal and postnatal care, specialneeds support and parenting advice.

Tony Blair praised pupils at St Charles Primary School in County Durhamwho devised a buddies scheme to help children with bullying and personalproblems. The prime minister planted a tree in the school's sensorygarden, a haven for pupils to speak to mentors.

Children and families helped choose everything from nursery toys to thecolour of the walls at a new Sure Start children's centre in Bath.

The building is based at St Martin's Garden Primary School and will openofficially in the autumn.
