Under what circumstances would the local authority provide a child with accommodation?
There are a variety of circumstances in which a local authority (LA) may need to accommodate a child such as where a child is an unaccompanied asylum seeker or where a baby has been abandoned and the parents’ whereabouts are unknown.
A birth parent of a child may also ask a LA to accommodate their child if they feel they are unable to look after him.
If a LA feels that a child should not remain living with their parents while they are conducting a section 47 investigation or assessment they may seek the parents’ consent to the child being accomm-odated. Accommodation can be provided under either s.20 or s.17 of the Children Act 1989.
