Save the Children, the Refugee Council and Bail for ImmigrationDetainees have launched a campaign to persuade the Home Office to endits "inhumane and unnecessary" policy of detaining children as part ofthe immigration process.
More than 2,000 children were detained in England and Wales last year'some for as long as 268 days. According to research carried out earlierthis year by Save the Children, the effects of detention on childreninclude depression, health problems and behavioural changes.
Jasmine Whitbread, chief executive of Save The Children, said: "UnlessCharles Clarke acts now children will continue to suffer theconsequences of detention."
