Sandwell has seen a marked increase in the number of looked-after children receiving an annual health assessment.

In the space of four years, the number of looked-after children receiving an annual healthcare assessment in Sandwell has jumped from 73 per cent to 87 per cent.

Paul Wojciechowski, divisional manager for looked-after children at Sandwell Council, says it is vital to engage young people in a way that helps them understand the importance of having regular health checks.

"It is young people rather than younger children that we needed to up our game with," he says. "Young people, quite rightly, want to have more control over what actions take place that involve them."
